When I mentioned it to the woman at the checkin counter she told me they skipped it because of time and if I wanted to see it I should have asked for it.
When I asked the guide about the fort, at first, he told me that the fort was at another attraction. When I told him I had been there and seen it before, he said: "Oh that fort. We stopped showing that 3 weeks ago because of rattle snakes. There is a nest of them that I could not eliminate. We did that for your protection." Then he excused himself and said he had to get lunch.
How she thought I could anticipate what stops the guide was going to make, I have no idea.
I do appreciate the work being done by the sanctuary but I also feel when you pay for a tour you should get the entire tour and not have it cut short in the interests of getting back on schedule. The most important issue to me is honesty. Once I heard the fake rattle snake story I wasn't sure of anything that guide had told the group.
Took the 3 hour tour yesterday and my driver was Rick. Very knowledgeable regarding the horses, sanctuary and history of the area. Would definitely do this again if I have the chance to return to the area. Wish my daughter and granddaughter could have been there as well. The animals are beautiful and obviously loved and cared for. Thanks for a great time
Amazing place with an amazing story. If you're in the Black Hills make a tour here a priority. This is one you'll never forget.
See rescued wild Mustangs and learn about there fight for survival. This facility provides a long-term home four wild horses. The tour was very nice, but a little pricey, at least it goes to a good cause. The wild turkeys were fun to see. And we got to admire an amazing Petroglyph panel and old school house (would have been nice to have gone in). We also got to see one of the locations for the filming of Hildago.
I have visited the facility in the past as well as recommended the tour to others. On September 16th, 2017 I took 2 friends to the sanctuary for a tour. One of the sights that I enjoyed in the past, and told my friends to expect, is an overview of a Canyon that contains a replica of the fort used in the movie "Dancing With the Wolves".
Enjoyed talking to the clerk...she shared a lot of information. Wish we could have afforded the tour. I think they may get more people if the tours were a little less. Happy they are there to protect those horses and breeds.
Our tour started 15 minutes late (the guide couldn't get his bus to start) but ended on time. (We never saw the fort) Another group was waiting for the bus.
