Not going to lie, I thought this place would be a gimmicky tourist trap when taking my nephew. To our surprise, it was awesome! Good, friendly tour guides and the site itself is great since they've left things in place whenever possible.
Amazing experience for the two kids and I, the tour is well put together. You start in a movie theater and watch a short film that explains how the mammoth site came into existence over many many years. Then they take you on a tour through the facility explaining about the different types of animal fossils found in the pit. The staff is incredible, my credit card was missing as we were getting ready to leave. I had purchased tickets for the tour so I knew I had my card when we got there. The staff set everything else aside and went on a full-on search throughout the site to find my card, I think they were more excited when they found it than I was. You don't find service like that very often, and I was so grateful, 600 miles from home without a credit card would have been bad. Very thankful to their staff and my apologies for ever second-guessing their Clerk, who had handed the card back to me after purchasing the tickets. We'll go back every time we are in the Black Hills. They are awesome
Kudos to simply keeping the history and importance alive guys, but some wealthy benefactor needs to help fun an expanded wing or three to make stopping by worth the time for the general public.
We arrived with very little time to explore the museum and wish we could have had more time to read up on the material and speak with staff. Read a previous review saying you could skip this museum....that review seriously annoyed me as the museum is amazing. It is not everyday where you can see so many mammoth remains in one place or get so close to them. It is also fascinating to see them in situ, whilst the work continues to unearth their remains. Seeing bones reconstructed in a museum is all well and good but does not give you an idea of their provenance. I was so pleased we managed to see the exhibit as part of our road trip and will be sharing my photos with my friends. Thank you to the team who have created the museum and continue to work on unearthing the mysteries of the mammoths.
This was a very worthwhile museum to go to. I was very interested in indoor dig site and the facts they presented. Definitely worth the money.
I guess I just had my hopes set too high before going here. It's probably great for the auxiliary kid activities over the weekend, but as a tourist attraction, you could settle for taking a picture of the mammoth in the parking lot and just move on. The staff is relatively knowledgeable and the tour is "neat", but I doubt you will be showing anyone your pictures afterwards.
